With loosening legal restrictions on the cannabis plant is coming new evidence and awareness of the pain relief properties it can offer in a medicinal capacity. Â One cannabis company has taken this growing body of knowledge and applied it to a new product: a cannabis patch designed for fibromyalgia patients.
Cannabis Science, a California company, released their cannabis “pain patch”, which can be placed on an afflicted area of the skin to allow absorption of cannabinoids to ease pain. Â As the skin absorb the medicinal cannabis, it enters the bloodstream to provide relief.
The cannabis company claims their patch is only the start, as they are heavily researching other options for cannabis application and delivery. Â A similar patch product is also sold by Mary’s Medicinal, but are only available in Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Washington, Michigan and Oregon.
Cannabis Science released the following statement on their product:
“The patch provides a controlled release of the medication into the patient, usually through either a proud membrane covering a reservoir of medication or through body heat melting thin layers of medication embedded in the adhesive which will be containing high potency cannabinoid (CBD) extract that slowly enters into the bloodstream and then penetrates the central nervous system”
Classic pain relievers are widely being recognized as addictive and often dangerous, with overdose deaths cause by opioids rising in many parts of the country. Â Several studies have indicated cannabis is an excellent alternative to these drugs.
A University of Michigan study discovered that “patients using medical marijuana to control chronic pain reported a 64 percent reduction in their use of more traditional prescription pain medications…[patients] also reported fewer side effects from their medications and a 45-percent improvement in quality of life.”
Another telling bit of research from a separate source found that states which have legalized medical marijuana have seen a 25% reduction in the number of overdose deaths. Â It seems clear that medicinal cannabis is the way to go for pain meds, and this patch can make your dosage convenient and quick!”
